Portland is :(

Unhappy Portland

As I said on Facebook to a friend who asked about this:

As we are also often ranked the #1 most enlightened city - in terms of arts, literature, environmental awareness, etc - it makes sense that 8 years of Bush/Cheney would have created a pit of despair. I know many people - including myself - who have been extremely worried about the country and where people of our "Portland mindset" belong. That's really over simplified, but maybe there is something to it.

What do you think, readers?

I much prefer being anxious in Portland to be being anxious in, say, Baltimore, Dallas, Columbus, Louisville, Jersey City or Fresno. People here don't know what depressed is till they done time in the cheatin' side of these towns.

Happy is overrated. How can you get anything done, write about conflict, or see clearly when you're happy? I know Portland is gorgeous, so does the weather suck or is there like weird mojo going on?

I love the weather in Portland. It is seasonal with an exquisite late summer / fall. And it really doesn't rain as much as people like to say - but I love gray, rainy weather, so I enjoy that part anyway.

And the summers are almost completely rain free with a temp from 80 - 90 about three months. And this past winter we got a good deal of snow - which was fun.

I think the depression has to do with Portland having felt like an oasis in the middle of the pile of shit called Bush's America - we'll see how things go the next four years.
